The Perfect Jungle Retreat: Sepilok Jungle Resort

The Perfect Jungle Retreat: Sepilok Jungle Resort

During our trip to Borneo to see the Orangutans at the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sepilok we decided to spend 2 nights at the Sepilok Jungle Resort.

Nestled deep in the rainforest the Sepilok Jungle Resort is perfect if you want to take some time away from it all and truly relax and unwind in nature.

Here you will only be awakened by the rhythmic sounds of cicadas, chirping birds or monkeys calling to one another.

Dedicated to nature and the surrounding environment this family run Resort has been created and established over the last 30 years.

Right in the heart of the action Sepilok Jungle Resort is the place to stay while visiting the world famous Orangutan reserve.

The Sepilok Jungle Resort is located in the main part of Sepilok and is just a 5 minute walk from the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Sun Bear Centre and a 10 minute drive from the Rainforest Discovery Centre.

The Banana Cafe is also attached and they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Sepilok is a unique jungle retreat, the hotel and pool blend seamlessly into the surrounding lush tropical landscape and encourage you to unwind.  An unforgettable experience, that has to be a highlight of our trip, was listening to the wildlife while taking a cooling afternoon dip in the beautiful swimming pool.

Check In Process

The check in process is very smooth; after filling out a short form and being given some information about the area we were directed the way to our room and were on our way within 5 minutes.

If you arrive after 5pm at Sepilok Jungle Resort you are advised to head down to Banana Cafe for check in, this is easy to find with plenty of signage and is just a little further down the lane.

The reception area opens up onto a lake surrounded by tall trees towering over you draped in thick vines. The lake is also home to plenty of fish, lizards and birds.

All of the rooms are located across a bridge which gives a beautiful first impression.

The atmosphere of Sepilok Jungle Resort is very much wild and is exactly what you come for. Every area, except the bedrooms, is open air, meaning that you are constantly being reminded of the jungle around you and have the opportunity which one was yours? to connect with it.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are busy, there are plenty of other guests eating here and its a good opportunity to meet some others travellers or exchange Orangutan photos from the day.

The staff here were all very warm and welcoming,  going out of their way to ensure we had the best stay possible.

Accommodation wise there is something for everyone and every budget. You can choose from 8 different rooms ranging from dormitory to deluxe.

Sepilok Jungle Resort also offers a range of family rooms for larger groups that want to stay together.

During our time here we stayed in a Deluxe Double Room. The room is a good size, there is plenty of space to keep your bags and move around. It comes equipped with a private balcony, air, tea and coffee making facilities, a hot shower, wifi connection and a good size comfortable bed.

The theme for the room along with most of the hotel is neutral browns and white, it gives you that log cabin jungle feeling.

All rooms are cleaned daily, towels are changed and water, tea, coffee, toilet roll are replenished.

The services provided here are second to none and everyone is extremely helpful, Sepilok Jungle Resort is linked to Banana Cafe which is an open air cafe overlooking the lake.

Here they serve breakfast 8am – 10am, lunch 10am – 2.30pm and dinner 4.30pm – 7.30pm. Breakfast is inclusive in the room rate and lunch/dinner are additional charges.

The free breakfast is a buffet style which includes tea, coffee, water, fresh fruits, eggs, beans, vegetable fritters and noodles along with a toast maker, butter and jam.

There is sufficient seating in the Banana Cafe and you can really take your time here to enjoy your breakfast and admire your surroundings.

The swimming pool area located in the resort also has a childs pool and jacuzzi, this was the perfect touch and a wonderful way to chill out and relax after exploring all day.

You can chat to reception about your stay here in Sepilok and they will be happy to help you and advise on any tours, or actives you have planned. You can also book yourself a Timan massage to help you unwind.

One key service they provide here is cash withdrawals. Most of the centres in Sepilok only accept cash so if you run out you have to go back to Sandakan to the nearest ATM. Luckily the hotel provides a cash back service so you don’t have to miss out on any adventures!
