Why I Loved My Stay at Arya Wellness Retreat in Ubud

How to Book Arya Wellness Retreat

The Arya Wellness Retreat is a boutique hostel, therefore can be found on all your usual booking sites such as Booking.com and Hostel World.

This lush destination, however, is under high demand, so if you are planning to visit Ubud and want to stay at Arya Wellness Retreat, I would recommend booking in advance, as the rooms here usually get booked up well in advance.

You can check their availability and book with instant confirmation via Booking.com using the availability checker below.

Accommodation Types

So that the Arya Wellness Retreat appeals to all women travelling to Ubud, Bali, there is a mix of shared dorms and private rooms here. Both are beautifully decorated and super comfy, costing a little more than your average hostel, but for good reason, with what is included.

This mixture also attracts a more mature and laid-back traveller, meaning Arya Wellness Retreat is the perfect place to truly relax and rejuvenate your mind, body and soul in this calming oasis.

With 10 female dorms and 4 private rooms, when the hostel is fully booked, there are up to 48 wonderful, like-minded women for you to get to know and build life-long connections with.

Shared Dorms

💸 Nightly rate — 650,000 IDR (£29.50)

The cheaper option of the 2 and perfect for solo travellers is the 4-bed shared dorms.

All of the shared dorms throughout Arya Wellness Retreat are the same, with 2 sets of bunk beds, which are bigger than your average hostel beds, privacy curtains, a shelf and a lamp in your bed.

Air-conditioning is in every room, which is turned on between 6 pm and 10 am during the day. When the air-conditioning is not on, there is a large fan to help ventilate each room.

There are large lockers, which come with a key to lock them and are big enough to fit all of your belongings, including your bag.

Each room also includes a balcony or terrace with allocated hangers to dry your towel or bikini on, as well as a large bathroom, separate shower cubicle and large sink with a basket to store your toiletries.

There is also a large full-length mirror, which is essential for a female only hostel.

Private Rooms

💸 Nightly rate — 1,800,000 IDR (£81.50)

Whether you are heading to Ubud on a holiday or travelling long term with a larger budget or with a friend, or fancy some privacy, the private rooms here at Arya Wellness Retreat are lush and the perfect escape.

A very similar layout to the dorm rooms, the private rooms boast large double beds, space to store your clothes, a small safe, a TV, a private bathroom and air-conditioning.

All of the private rooms are upstairs, so there is a private balcony with outside seating offering views over the rice paddies as well as a rack to dry your towel or bikinis.

What’s Included in Your Stay

At first glance, Arya Wellness Retreat can seem like a far too expensive option, especially if you are travelling and trying to stick to a budget, but once you discover what is included for this price, I don’t believe there is any argument to say that it isn’t worth every penny.

Breakfast

First up is the daily breakfast served from 7 am to 10 am.

This is freshly prepared by the kitchen staff and you have a choice of 4 options, pancakes with fruit, a fruit plate, homemade muesli with fruits and milk of your choice or an omelette, which, if you ask nicely, they can sometimes make into fried eggs instead.

There is also a tea and coffee stand included where you can make your own drinks, or if you have your own tea bags, you can use the water refill station, which dispenses both hot and cold water.

Meditation & Yoga Classes

An hour and a half every morning of pure bliss, if you can make it in time, that is!

Starting at 6.30 am, yes, early I know, these classes are hosted by a local teacher and kick off with a 30-minute meditation. The meditations were often a mixture of focusing on your breath, guided meditation, and silence.

Once you are truly zenned out and at peace, the yoga class starts at 7 am, and these are a mixture of Vinyasa, Hatha and Ashtanga. Often, more girls who were not up and ready for the meditation will join the yoga class.

These are completely free and included in your stay, just remember to add your name to the list at reception for the next day’s classes.

Massages, Manicures & Pedicures

Yes, you read that right, it really is this good at the Arya Wellness Retreat. Included for free every single day is a 15-minute massage where you have a choice of back or legs, and a manicure or pedicure.

Starting at 12 pm, the therapists stay until 6 pm, with the 15-minute slots each, there is a very good chance you can get each booked in.

The massages are very popular and often get filled the day before or at least by the morning, so if you would like one booked in, make sure to schedule yourself a slot when you know your plans. Like the daily classes, there is a list at reception where you can add your name to your desired time slot.

For the manicures and pedicures, you are supposed to only have one per day, but as the nail technician is often much quieter than the masseuse, if you ask nicely, I am sure you could get both done together if there is space.

Wellness Events — Ceremonies, Circles & Workshops

This, I’d say, was my absolute favourite free perk to Arya Wellness Retreat, almost every day you had some form of gathering or class that brought the community of the hostel together in wonderful ways.

These options were sound healing, women’s circles and cacao ceremonies starting at 6 pm. It was the perfect place to meet other like-minded travellers and open up in safe spaces held by wonderful women.

The other free workshops were jamu making, which is a local Balinese drink of boiled turmeric and other spices and a Balinese experience which included making offerings and an explanation during into Balinese culture.

Like the other classes, just make sure to sign up at reception before the classes take place.

Social Events — Movie Nights, Family Dinners & Ring Making

Not all of these options are free, but the ones that aren’t are only a small additional cost and well worth it if you feel like trying out something a little more social.

Free and included in your stay at Arya are the movie nights, held twice a week. These were so wholesome, the staff set up a huge projector by the pool and lay out all the bean bags and cushions to sit on, with it being a female-only hostel, it’s like a big girls’ sleepover, imagine movies such as Mamma Mia, Eat Pray Love, The Great Gatsby, etc, etc, and they even bring out little tubes of popcorn, it really doesn’t get much cuter. However, to make these evenings even better, they offer a pasta and wine deal for 89,000 (£4) for you to enjoy whilst you watch the movie.

For an additional cost and held twice per week are the family dinners, these are 100,00 IDR (£4.50), which is quite a standard price for a meal in Ubud, these are buffet style dinners for girlies in the hostel and are all you can eat so you can go back and refill your plate over and over if you wish to!

Again, for an additional cost and held at the mixed sister hostel, Puri Gardens, are the ring making class, cooking class and Indo night. These events and classes are some of the most popular excursions in Ubud, and if you are tight on time or unsure of who to take these classes with, the hostel is a great choice.

Extra Cost — Day Trips

These are an additional cost but are fully arranged by the hostel, taking away the stress of trying to plan your excursions.

Your options are the day trip where you visit a local school, a waterfall, a coffee plantation to try the locally made coffee and tea, a lunch spot and the rice terraces. This is a great well well-rounded tour including a little bit of everything Ubud has to offer, making it a great option for those short on time. It is also very well priced at only 300,000 IDR (£14).

The other day trip on offer is the adventure tour for the thrill seekers, which includes an ATV tour through the Ubud jungle and white water rafting down the rivers! These are 2 of Ubud’s top adventurous excursions, and this is a great way to tick them both off your bucket list in one day! Costing 1,250,000 IDR (£56), this is one of the more expensive options when it comes to day trips.

Best Time to Visit

With the island being hot all year, Bali is really a year-round destination but it heavily depends on what you are planning to do once you’re here to determine the best time to visit for you.

There are two main seasons here, rainy or dry!

The dry season runs from April to October. This is the island’s peak season, where you will find more tourists and the prices can be a lot higher. To avoid the height of the peak season, travel outside of April to August.

The rainy season in Bali is November to March, whilst the temperatures are still warm, it will usually rain for 1 out of 2 days. Visiting in the rainy season may mean activities such as diving or snorkelling may be off the cards however, activities like yoga, waterfall hopping, and temples are still accessible.

How to Get to Arya Wellness Retreat

Getting to Arya Wellness Retreat highly depends on where you have come from, but the end of your journey will most likely be by a local taxi or Grab, especially if you are arriving from another destination within Bali.

Flying into Bali, you will land at Denpasar airport, where you can either catch a local taxi, this is something Arya can arrange for you if you contact them in advance of your arrival. Or if you are looking for a cheaper option, then head to the Grab pickup point and get a Grab to Ubud.

Alternatively if you are arriving to Bali from one of the islands and coming in via boat once you arrive at a ferry port you will be able to hop in your pre arranged taxi if you did so with Arya before arriving, haggle yourself a good price with a local driver or get a Grab to Arya in the heart of Ubud.

I truly cannot recommend the Arya Wellness Retreat enough, not only does it not feel like a hostel one bit, it really is a sanctuary out of the wonderful chaos of Ubud, where you just feel safe to be yourself and enjoy the connection with other girls in the hostel.
